Why read and write Fantasy

5 min read

Welcome to my stop for the blog tour organized by Tomorrow Comes Media for Rose Marie Machario‘s book The Amulet of Elements! I have not had a chanc to read the book yet but it is always a pleasure to host an author on my blog and hear more from them, rather than me sharing my thoughts (which I usually what I do). Since The Amulet of Elements is a fantasy, I asked Rose about her 10 favorite fantasy books. Instead, she shared this interesting piece about the role that fantasy has played in her life. Let’s learn a little more about Rose before we dive into her guest post, and then after, I’ll share the book cover and synopsis with you.

Why I read and write fantasy?

I have to say that there are so many fantasy novels out there that it is by far too many to narrow them down to the top ten. It makes more sense to name the top ten fantasy writers to be honest.

Without the authors like George RR Martian, JK Rowling, Neil Gaiman, JRR Tolkien, Rick Riordan, Stephen King, Terry Brooks, HP Lovecraft, CS Lewis, and one that I actually know personally, Stephen Zimmer, there wouldn’t be any fantasy to read.

We have grown up with them, and we have raised our kids on their stories too.

I think it was authors with fantasy stories out there who helped to inspire my need to read about worlds that I could escape to, and immerse myself into the characters so much so that I could still somehow relate to them.

Fantasy is by far my favorite genre, although I do read others, but they still can’t hold a torch to the magic, mayhem, and mythical creatures that you can only find in a good fantasy novel.

I have always been intrigued with the written word ever since I could hold up a book on my own. I love to disappear into the unknown worlds and join the protagonists on their great adventures. I love the magick, and the moments that make me either laugh or cry. I love to hate the villains, but I hate it when something awful happens to the heroes. I love the variety in how each world, or each person, or even every creature has their own special powers, language, or something so unique to only them. I love more than anything to escape among them, cry with them, feel joy with them, and then be proud of them when they finally complete their quests. They become my family.

I want to include the reasons that I myself write fantasy, why out of all the other genres that I could choose, I chose fantasy above all the others. I think it comes down to enjoying what you read first.

If you don’t enjoy reading a particular genre, why write it? I’m sure any professional writer could pull a story, any story out of their hat and write about it. Does that mean that their heart will be in it though?

Will that deep passion be there when they start writing the words? How does someone know that any one genre is the right one for them?

For myself I can say easily that I prefer to write what I love, and what I enjoy to read. It is a gift to write, but the truest gift for anyone to have is the love and enjoyment that they get from something, anything, whether it’s a book, a movie, or something else entirely.

There is no rule that says you should only write what you love to read, but I think it is a natural occurrence that it just happens to be that way. I believe everyone should write what they love to write about, and no one should have to obey the rules that you should only write what you know. When you write fantasy anything can happen, and I like surprises.

Write what you love, and always dream big.

The Amulet of Elements
The Amulet of Elements by Rose Marie Machario

Isn’t that an amazing take on the role that fantasy plays in our lives as reader? I absolutely love this perspective! Here is more about Rose’s fantasy novel The Amulet of Elements:

Princess Ellyria Rose found her special places in the books she read. Imagining herself in far off lands, she would dream of the knight who might rescue her one day from her dull, everyday life of needlepoint and lessons on becoming a lady.

Princess Ellyria Rose yearned for adventure and on her sixteenth birthday she got her wish, being rescued by the man of her dreams. Little did she know that would prove to be an adventure she did not expect to have.

Betrayed by the very man whom Princess Ellyria trusted, and left at the mercy of her father’s enemy, she had to use her wits to escape; along with the help of the very man who led her astray in the beginning.

Danger unfolds time and again, revealing an ancient story about a princess and a prophecy.
