Welcome friend! Bookstores and libraries don’t just have to be places where we find our next book. They can be a place of community where we meet people who love books. In recent years, I have read many books about bookstore/library patrons. Today, I am on tour for The English Bookstore in Bologna. This is a unique feel good story about a bookstore in Italy that is visited by expats. I haven’t finished the book yet and instead of a review, I thought it would be fun to do a Meet the Cast post. Something to give you a glimpse of the people in this story.
Let’s meet them!
Sandy is the owner of the English Bookstore in Bologna. She is a feisty lady; some might call her The Porcupine behind her back. She has an aversion to romance. This shows in her stocking of minimal number of titles in the romance section of the bookstore.
My prediction for her is that she is indeed going to find love in this story.
Next, we have George. He is still adjusting to the rhythms of the retired life. As a go-getter, a lot has changed. He has come to Bologna with his daughter, Bianca. She means the world to him.
I wonder if George is the eventual love interest.
Bianca is a psychotherapist. She launched a self-help book that did not do well. A breakdown led her to leave everything behind and come to Italy.
Our next patron is Harold. He is a young man who used to be a barista in Denver. After an awful heartbreak, he has arrived in Italy hoping for reinvention.
I suspect Bianca and Harold could be good friends.
Last, but maybe the most endearing member of the cast, there is Moira. She works at the bookstore and wants it to be a community hub that patrons return to. She is supposed to be every patron’s favourite. A young woman from England, she is a hopeless optimist in spite of all that she has seen in her short life.
I think she is going to be the person who introduces these people to each other or encourages their connection.

It sounds like exactly the sort of place where a few unexpected connections might change things.
Though beach season is over, this would be a beach read for me.
