As the days get colder and fall becomes fully in swing, I found myself looking for some woodsy, gothic fantasies. I found Lakesedge, and it was a perfect book to read during a crisp fall day.

This book immediately introduces us to Violeta, or Leta for short, as she is trying to maneuver the townsfolk’s prejudices against her and her brother, who has shown some signs of dark magic lately. Knowing that her brother means no harm, she fiercely protects him from any threat. As her and her brother embark on a journey to better understand her brother’s powers, the plot continues to move forward as stakes and tensions rise.

The cast in this book are a loveable group– Leta, her brother Arien, and the mysterious heir to Lakesedge Estate are our main characters, while also bringing in a few side characters along the way. This book’s forest and European-fairy-tale vibes set the gloomy tone, but also I appreciated each moment where the characters were able to find joy and hope in the middle of their quests.

As a young adult novel, this book reads quickly and flows smoothly with ease, and I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a darker fairy tale story that’ll transport you to an overcast and wooded day.

A big thank you to Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), and Netgalley for a copy of this eARC in exchange for an honest review!
