I started reading audiobooks in September 2017 ( I remember the month and the book – Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult) and since then, they have been a constant companion in my everyday life. I listen when I am folding laundry, doing a routine task that I have done too many times. In today’s blog hop fellow readers and I are sharing about their last audiobook read, so if you love audiobooks, there are tons are recommendations for you here. For me it was:
Uncanny Valley: A Memoir by Anna Wiener – As a 26 year old woman who works in Data Analytics, this book has a number of draws for me – the memoir of a woman who was there during the tech boom, trying to leave her mark. In the West, there is a movement right now to get more women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and it was quite interesting to read about the time when technology was a new industry and women truly were fewer in number. Anna’s stories about hiring people as well as the kind of questions she was asked while being hired was eye-opening. She talked about how qualifications do not matter in the tech start-up; she herself was not a computing scientist or studied computers before she got into that line of business. I found the book intriguing in a number of ways.

I’ve been listening to more audiobooks this year. I recently finished Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos which was narrated by a whole cast of voice overs. They all did an amazing job. I’ve just started Undone by Jason Deas, narrated by Kyle Tait.

I’m not one for listening to audiobooks much–I lose track of the story too easily when it’s being read to me, as opposed to reading it myself. I think the last audiobook I listened to was Summer Knight, the fourth book in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher–and even that, I only listened to a few of the audiobooks because the narrator is James Marsters, an actor of whom I am very much a fan! It was fun listening to him getting into the character of Harry Dresden–made me wish he’d actually played him on the TV show!

Parker Pyne Investigates by Agatha Christie was the most recent audiobook I listened to (and finished). Out of the Agatha Christie detectives I’ve read – Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, and now Parker Pyne – I have to admit that Parker Pyne is my least favorite by nearly a mile. Some of the events and circumstances within the stories in this collection (each chapter presents a different mystery) felt a little predatory and hollow; Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are two characters I would enjoy being in the company of, while I would prefer not to meet or cross paths with Parker Pyne.
With that said, the production component of the audiobook was great; Hugh Fraser is unsurprisingly a great narrator.

The Selection by Kiera Cass. This series has been on my TBR for quite a while and I decided to borrow the audiobook from my local library and listen to it. I really enjoyed the narration and the story. I plan on starting book 2 in the series immediately.

At this writing, the last audiobook I listened to was The Good Daughter. I have had it in my TBR for quite awhile so I listened to this and it was really good. However, before listening to it, I discovered there was a prequel to it, Last Breath, so I downloaded and listened to it as well. I do realize that these books were written in 2017, but I would so love to see the main character, Charlie Quinn, in more books by Karin Slaughter.

The last audiobook that I listened to was The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. This is just such a fun story and it’s such an awesome listen! I really need to make more use of libro.fm this year.

I’ve never listened to an audiobook! I keep meaning to try them but have found with podcasts / talk radio that I have a tendency to switch off when I am only listening. My husband though has started to listen to books and has signed up for Audible so maybe 2020 will be the year I give audiobooks a whirl.

I’m reading about 99% in audiobook format, but as of writing this, the last audiobook I finished was book 7 in the Sasha Urban series. It’s a really fun Urban Fantasy series about a woman who’s a mentalist/illusionist. Before she finds out that there actually is real magic… I finished the entire series in about a week because it was so captivating that I was basically listening non-stop all day every day!

Currently, I’m listening to Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I generally only listen to nonfiction audiobooks. Even though I love memoirs, I don’t know that I would have chosen this one on my own. It was a book club pick. I’m writing this in early March, so I hope by the time this post is live I’ll be onto my next audiobook adventure.

If you like Scific, I would recommend, Salvaged by Madeleine Roux. It was a fantastic audiobook.
