Book three of the Murderbot Diaries, Rogue Protocol continues Murderbot adventures through space. All the books in the series so far have been hard to put down and it is great to have that expectation met every time.
Rogue Protocol
By Martha Wells | Goodreads
SciFi’s favorite antisocial A.I. is again on a mission. The case against the too-big-to-fail GrayCris Corporation is floundering, and more importantly, authorities are beginning to ask more questions about where Dr. Mensah’s SecUnit is.
And Murderbot would rather those questions went away. For good.
Rogue Protocol – The Review
I got the audiobook from the library for this one and it had a quote from someone on the cover: “One of the most humane portraits of nonhumans that I have ever read”. I could not come up with better concise words to describe how I feel about this book.
Murderbot has been on a journey to understand its past and present and it cannot help falling back into what it is programmed to do – be a SecUnit. Without really realising it, it has built relationships with humans like Dr. Mensah and advanced bots like ART. It is always wary of other bots and SecUnits like itself.
On a self assigned mission to get Dr. Mensah the leverage she needs to expose an organization and reveal the illegal activity that had been going on an abandoned terraforming planet, Murderbot has no choice but to interact with a pet bot named Micky and help it and its humans survive. Though two augmented humans have been sent as the security details for the client, Murderbot knows they are not up for the task and it soon realizes they might not be there on a completely different mission.
I loved the pace of Rogue Protocol and Murderbot’s commentary on how bots are different from SecUnits and humans. It ends up finding a friend in Micky but the challenges of working with a bot that has a human friend are intricate and that complicates things drastically for our protagonist. There isn’t that much time to watch media afterall and while fighting Combat bots, controlling drones and trying to pretend to be SecUnit belonging to a human consultant, Murderbot has a lot on the go.
Have you read The Murderbot Diaries?
The world of the Murderbot Diaries is a vast one. There are many planets that humans have been able to reach and use for their own purposes. I adore the idea of scientists and androids working together and the technological advancements that we would have made as a species to get to this point… where we can jump wormholes and terraform and be able to investigate alien civilizations. I am excited to see which layers would be uncovered in the next book, Exit Strategy.
