October 2021 Wrap-Up

4 min read

Hello and welcome to October’s Wrap Up post! This year is coming to an end fast – Halloween always reminds me of the upcoming winter and cozy sweaters that will be the norm here in Canada for the next 5-7 months.

Kriti’s Selection

I spent a lot of time in September thinking about how I wanted to track my reading for year 28. Now that I have a proper format and I have tested it in October, I have some new stats to add to the monthly wrap up.

Total books read this month: 9
Number of personal picks: 5
Review copies: 4
Buddy Reads/ Book Club: 1

  • Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt is the best horror I have ever read and I have raved about it enough already. For full review and art, check out this post. Add it to your TBR if you dare on Goodreads.
  • Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert is another bok I raved about. It has given me a lot of perspective on being a creator and I highly recommend it. Full review and art can be found here. Find this book on Goodread.
  • Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Sáenz was a beautiful follow up to the first book. Full review and art here! Find it on Goodreads.
  • A Town called Solace by Mary Lawson – I chanced upon this one for a one week library hold and could not resist! I liked this slice of life story and will be discussing it with Charlie when she reads her copy this month. Check it out on Goodreads.
  • Allthingi: The Crescent and the Northern Star, Co-edited by Muhammad Aurangzeb Ahmad and Josh Gillingham is a wonderful collection of story stories about Norse and Islam cultural interactions. My review can be found by following this link. Find this book on Goodreads.
  • The Mystery of Mrs Christie by Marie Benedict was a random addition to my TBR because I found it during my library search (I like to just go and find books that interest me rather than from my TBR). I loved this speculative fiction about the famous mystery writer and will share my review later this month. Meantime, check out the book on Goodreads.
  • Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi was another impulsive addition to my TBR. I was craving a book with Hindu mythology and this was a very good one! I will be reading book 2 early next year and hoping to buddy read the rest of the series with Ariel. Check it out on Goodreads.
  • Crushing by Sophie Burrows is the most unique book I read in October. No words. Only images portray how two people meet. Learn more on Goodreads. My review will be up in January.
  • How Do You Live? by Genzaburo Yoshino has been recently translated to English. I learned a lot from this book and you can find my reflection here. This book is on Goodreads – it’s neat to see all the languages it has been translated into.

Total TBR: 184 (Oct 1) → 195 (Nov 1)
I added 9 review copies and 11 personal books to my TBR in October. Some of these books I read in October itself which I find a bit hilarious. Here are a few other noteworthy ones:

In October, I’m going to be participating in Indigathon to celebrate Indigenous voices. I have my TBR list with the prompts all set up, so stay tuned to see how I do next month!
