Welcome friend! I’m delighted to welcome Jennifer J. Chow back to Armed with A Book. We first connected in 2022 around Death by Bubble Tea, and since then, Jennifer has continued to create cozy mysteries filled with heart, heritage, and just a touch of magic.
Today, we’re chatting about Tell-Tale Treats, the latest instalment in her Magical Fortune Cookie series (January 27, 2026 by Minotaur Books) —a story that blends enchanted pastries, found family, and a mystery that refuses to stay buried. It was a joy to catch up and talk about cozy mysteries, writing comfort reads, and the magic that keeps readers coming back for more.
Tell-Tale Treats

Is Felicity to blame when a hotel guest drowns after eating her enchanted cookies? Felicity Jin returns in the third installment of the Magical Fortune Cookie series.
A group of high school alumnae reunite years later and reserve rooms at Pixie Inn for an extended retreat. As part of their pampering package, Felicity delivers a scrumptious assortment of enchanted pastries, including her new almond cookies.
But the queen bee of the group is soon found dead in her bathroom, drowned in the tub, and she recently sampled the delicious baked goods. Could Felicity’s almond cookies have set off a fatal nut allergy? The enchanted pastries are supposed to bring joy, not sorrow—and certainly not death.
Boyfriend, Kelvin Love, is eager to assist, although odd things have been happening to his senses ever since he baked with Felicity. Will his extra sensitivity help or hinder the investigation? Plus, special bunny Whiskers lends a magical paw to the detecting since Felicity can’t and won’t relax until she restores both order and magic to her world.
Get to know the author: Jennifer J. Chow
Hi Jennifer! It’s such a pleasure to have you on Armed with A Book again. We first connected back in 2022 about your novel Death by Bubble Tea. Tell me—what have you been up to since then, both in your writing life and beyond?

Thanks for having me again! I’ve since started a new series: The Magical Fortune Cookie novels. They all have mystery, magic…and a dash of murder. Beyond writing, I finally got to travel to England and explore the place where the amazing Dame Agatha Christie lived. I even got to watch The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the world (and the first writing of hers I ever read)!
This story revolves around a group of high school alumnae and long-held tensions. What drew you to exploring old friendships and the secrets they carry?
I think friendships are always rife with drama. These relationships cover different and sometimes polar notions: temporary versus long-lasting, deep versus superficial, similar versus opposite personalities, and much more!
The death in this book is tied to an almond-cookie allergy. How do you balance whimsical magic with real-world stakes in your mysteries?
I always leave room for respect and appropriate grieving around the murder and the actual crime scene. But I balance things out with sleuthing via quirky, enchanting ways, like fortunes coming true or a magical bunny with special insight. Plus, the comfort of baking is enchanting in its own way—make sure to check out the recipes offered in the series, including one for auspicious almond cookies!
This book brings back a cast of familiar characters from Pixie Inn. Do you have a favorite side character you love revisiting?
Whiskers! I really love having not just a pet, but a magical one. Besides, Whiskers has a direct tie to Chinese mythology, and I loved incorporating that cultural element.
Felicity often doubts herself even though she’s uniquely gifted. What do you admire most about her?
I admire her ability to lean on and learn from others. She’s open to understanding her mom’s perspective, hearing enigmatic advice from her godmother, and trusting in her boyfriend’s sensitive intuitions.
What is your favorite enchanted pastry Felicity has created so far?
So hard to choose! I think I’d have to pick the sponge cake featured in this latest book. The recipe brings back sweet (literally) memories from my childhood.
If you could magically taste-test one pastry from Felicity’s kitchen without any consequences, which would you pick?
All of them—ha! In Tell-Tale Treats, Felicity makes a giant fortune cookie (the size of her head), so I’d love to eat one of those. Not sure if I would really want to know the accompanying message and what’s in store for me, though!
The Magical Fortune Cookie series celebrates heritage, family, and cultural traditions. How do those themes shape your writing across all your series?
I love including generational ties and the importance of family, particularly elders passing down their wisdom. Heritage is also a substantial theme because it gives my characters a strong sense of identity—and, hopefully, belonging.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone who dreams of writing their own cozy mystery?
Be open to the ideas you find fascinating. Whether it’s your life experiences, captivating news events, or current beloved reads, these customized influences will result in a unique whodunit that will also be exciting for you to write.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I’m grateful to readers and want to thank all those who love literature. Thank you for harnessing the true magical power of reading! And a special thanks to fans who’ve reached out with kind words and expressed delight in my worlds; that kind of encouragement keeps me going.
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me, Jennifer!
