Today on Ariel’s Arcs, I’m very excited to be discussing Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse, a pre-Columbian Americas-inspired epic fantasy. I’ve already discussed the first book in the series, Black Sun, back in 2020. Since I wrote that review, I’ve been excitedly waiting to read the next book in this trilogy. I was able to buddy-read this with my friend Colleen, and I look forward to creating a creative post to celebrate the book’s release later this month with the B2Weird Instagram tour.
Sometimes I’m a bit wary of second books, especially in trilogies, because they can get caught up in a slog of setting up the final book in the trilogy. No such concern in this book! I blazed through this book within a week, and was always anxious to find out what happened next. Xiala and Serapio are two of my favorite characters of all time from any book, so it was so amazing to be back in the world with them.
We get some new point-of-views in this book that we didn’t get in Black Sun, and that provides a more comprehensive lens for the reader to see the political intrigue and recall important events of the first book through other perspectives. The overall character development made so much sense and made me quite emotional about the various choices the characters made in their agency. Rebecca Roanhorse is one of my favorite authors, and I especially love her other series, the Sixth World, due to the fact that all of her characters are well written with incredible depth.
Overall, I’d recommend this series if you’re looking for an epic fantasy full of intrigue, fantastic characters, prophecies, sweeping plots and breathtaking worldbuilding.
A big thank you to Saga for providing me an eARC of this book in exchange for a review! I’ll also be participating in the B2Weird tour for this book, so be on the lookout on my instagram for my tour post on April 21st!
