Today’s Ariel’s Arcs includes a helpful lesson I learned from Black Water Sister— don’t get in an angry ghost’s way! A Malaysian contemporary paranormal fiction that follows a recent US graduate who just returned home to Penang, Black Water Sister is a fast-paced story that’s part revenge, part self-discovery, and all in all a highly enjoyable story.
Our main character, Jessamyn, gets thrust into the middle of a revenge plot line as she discovers she’s a medium and vessel for some vengeful spirits. Ultimately, it’s kind of an inconvenience because she has other things to worry about, like her taking care of her parents, finding a job, making new friends, and wrestling with telling her parents about being gay. When her normal life gets disrupted, she finds herself in an unravelling mystery that includes the local gang boss as well. As the reader, I found myself excited to see what new clues she’d discover, and how her being possessed by spirits will impact her investigation.
This is a charmingly-written standalone that wraps up nicely, but I’d love to see more books with this main character again. While I have other books by this author on my to-be-read pile, this is the first book of Zen Cho’s that I’ve read, and it was great! I am very interested in continuing to read more of this author’s works. Thank you so much to Berkley Publishing Group and Netgalley for a copy of this eArc in exchange for an honest review!
