Welcome to the ninth Backlist Bingo 2024 Check in! Let’s see how much progress we made in September. Like always, let’s take a look at what other participants have been reading and which year of books we have been gravitating to as a community.
Ariel’s Backlist Bingo Update
Prompt: Horror
Book Name: The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias | Goodreads
Quick review: A brutal and visceral accounting of a man who is pushed to his limits and beyond, The Devil Takes You Home is a horror that sticks with the reader beyond the final page.
Prompt: A New/Re-Release
Book Name: The Phonenix King by Aparna Verma | Goodreads
Quick review: This book has a cool world of a high tech sci-fi setting with a magical fantasy element in the forefront. The blend of technology with magical prophecies created an engaging dynamic, and the characters interacting in this world made for a quick read overall!
Kriti’s Backlist Bingo Update
Prompt: Book added to the TBR within a year
Book Name: The Magical Makings of Molly the Musician by Alexa Caroline Modugno | Goodreads
Quick review: A children’s illustrated story about a girl who loves to play the violin. Recently, she feels like giving up – the music she is playing isn’t in tune and she is feeling disheartened. This is a timeless story for all ages with a message to persevere and always follow one’s passion. It subtly highlights the sacrifices that come with striving to achieve a dream, no matter how old we are. Review posted here.
Prompt: A Prequel
Book Name: Prelude Cycle by S. Kaeth | Goodreads | Children of the Nexus #0.5
Quick review: I love returning to the world of Children of Nexus. Since I read the first book in 2020, I knew this was a series and an author I would always want more of. With The Prelude Cycle, I got a glimpse of the main characters of the series some seasons before it begins in Between Starfalls. Taunos, Takiyah, Kaemada and Ra’ael grew up together. Their paths have influenced one anothers. Full review posted here.
Prompt: First book in a series
Book Name: The Wizard’s Ward by Jules McAleese | Goodreads | Vale #1
Quick review: If you are looking for YA Fantasy with beautiful book interiors and exteriors as well as a captivating story, give this one a read. The story moves at a good pace and there was never a dull moment! I found the angle of an evil Elf king refreshing. I liked Francis, the Elf King’s wizard’s ward, the implications and powers of her gray blood. Read more in my review.
