Summer Reading Meditation

2 min read

Dear friend, changing seasons can mean changing priorities and time. Whether it’s the sun inviting us outside, road trips to visit family, afternoons by the beach or pool, staycations or vacations, even if we read as much as we do, the texture of that experience can feel quite different. I will never forget the beautiful sunny afternoon where I read a page of a book as my toddler did laps up and down her slide. It may have been only a few minutes later that she came to me and ran away with my book but those minutes of reading were pure bliss.

I have been thinking about my changing days since and today, in a new instalment of Reader Life, I wanted to share an invitation to a summer reading of intention. This is not a reading list of what you can enjoy in books. This is simply permission to let reading meet you where you are.

A Summer Reading Meditation

A Summer Reading Meditation - flowers and books

Let this season be the one where you read slowly… Where you savor each page. Where you are present with the characters in the world you are visiting. May reading feel less like catching up and more like arriving.

Let this season be when you are honest about whether this book is for you right now. May you put down what doesn’t feel like you right now and find what resonates easily.

Let this be the season where you reach for a book your heart has been longing for.

May you rejoice in all the conversations you have, short and long, about books in yours and other people’s lives.

May you sit with a sentence for as long as you want. May you highlight, annotate, bookmark as you please.

May you buy what feels like magic to have found. May you donate what you no longer want to hold on to.

May the sunshine warm you up and the book by your side, even if it’s on your device.

May the breeze remind you of your beautiful life.

May your reading life this summer feel less like a goal and more like a companion.

Welcome summer reading!
