Reading with a Slice of Life: The Names

2 min read

Welcome friend. Last July, I tried something different. Instead of reading a book straight through and gathering my thoughts at the end, I paused and wrote alongside it. I let each section sit next to my days — my routines, my questions, my memories. What emerged was not a traditional review.

I am finally excited to bring this to you!

Welcome to the very first iteration of Reading with a Slice of Life! In this series, I share my reading in real time — one section at a time — weaving together what’s happening on the page with what’s unfolding in my own life. It is part readalong, part diary, part conversation between story and self.

This first series follows my experience reading The Names. The book naturally broke into six sections, and I wrote a reflection for each one. Rather than posting them all at once, I’ll be sharing them slowly over the coming weeks, allowing space between entries.

After the six reflections, I’ll return with a final post — stepping back to consider the book as a whole: its themes, its structure, and the questions that lingered long after I turned the last page.

If you’ve read the book, I hope this feels like revisiting it with a friend.

If you haven’t, I hope this invites you to read differently.

Day 1 begins next.

The Names

Florence Knapp

Goodreads

The extraordinary novel that asks: Can a name change the course of a life?

In the wake of a catastrophic storm, Cora sets off with her nine-year-old daughter, Maia, to register the birth of her son. Her husband, Gordon, respected in the community but a controlling presence at home, intends for her to follow a long-standing family tradition and name the baby after him. But when faced with the decision, Cora hesitates….

Spanning thirty-five years, what follows are three alternate and alternating versions of their lives, shaped by Cora’s last-minute choice of name. In richly layered prose, The Names explores the painful ripple effects of domestic abuse, the messy ties of family, and the possibilities for autonomy and healing.

Through a prism of what-ifs, Florence Knapp invites us to consider the “one … precious life” we are given. Full of hope, this is the story of three names, three versions of a life, and the infinite possibilities that a single decision can spark. It is the story of one family and love’s endless capacity to endure, no matter what fate has in store.
