Writing & Blogging
Reviews on the Blog
I was visiting my family in India for two weeks but I was able to keep up my usual reading and blogging. I bought four Indian history related books (one shown above) that are impossible to purchase or extremely expensive to buy in Canada.
I wrote reviews for 10 books this month and posted 10 (one of which is Ariel’s) to the blog. I finally made time to share my two long pending reviews – I read Babel and The Liberation of Sita in May 2023. Babel is the longest one so far at 14 min reading time. Ariel and I shared our buddy read discussion for The Scarlet Alchemist.
I continue to connect with authors and it was a pleasure to work with Tachyon Publications and Izzy Wasserstein on These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart. I also collaborated with fellow book blogger Alex at Spaceships and Spells to learn about his Norsevember challenge. Author and travel blogger Sharon Wagner shared about this different kind of blogging and her adventures in Central America.
Reflections & Learnings
In the latest TBR Tales, I celebrated Valentine’s Day with the authors whose works I love returning to. I have read 1-3 books by the authors I highlighted here. Many don’t have a long backlist so I hope so catch up!
On tour for A Sign of Her Own, I learned that ‘mute’ may be an offensive term to people in the deaf community. A deaf person may have functioning vocal chords and prefer to use sign language over spoken language, it is inaccurate to use the word them ‘mute’ in a such case. Knowing someone is a great way to avoid misconceptions and learn the nuances. That’s not always possible though. Part of the reason I read is to learn about communities and experiences that I don’t have personal insight or connection with. I am grateful for the readers, writers and professionals in publishings who kindly share their knowledge with those of us who want to know more by teaching us the appropriate and ever-evolving language.
